When you work with customers, it’s sometimes difficult to gauge their true feelings about the working relationship they had with you when a project has come to an end, which is why asking for testimonials is so important (though a little daunting too, we know!). Testimonials are useful for several reasons - the most important is that they help you develop an understanding of how your customers feel about the products and services you offer; they can also provide a great insight into what customers really like, and perhaps also what they felt could have been improved when working with you, which can prove incredibly valuable as you develop new relationships with new customers.
Testimonials are also useful when it comes to marketing your own business. It’s easy to create content on your website or social media channels that says, “Work with me, I’m great!”, but many customers like to hear feedback from trusted external sources to build up a picture of what working with you is actually like. Testimonials represent feedback from people just like your potential customers, helping them more effectively imagine themselves in the position of one your many happy customers, and considering the benefits that they too could experience if they worked with you.
At strategic points in a support contract, and also whenever a project comes to an end here at CC Professional, I gently reach out to customers and ask if they’d be happy to provide a testimonial for me. If you don’t already ask for testimonials in your business, why not start asking clients as part of your offboarding process? Remember, not every business will be happy leaving feedback, and not every customer will be happy having their name attributed publicly to a testimonial, so be sure to ask gently and to ensure that you have the customer’s explicit permission to use the content for your marketing material.
